Why is the Scheme Free?

Due to climate change, the UK Government is attempting to drastically cut carbon emissions and replacing old, inefficient boilers with modern, A-rated models is just one way they can make a considerable reduction.

In addition, the efficiency of modern boilers means they are cheaper to run, drastically helping to reduce the heating bills of low-income households and those at risk of fuel poverty.

However, for many households the cost of acquiring a new boiler can be significant and it’s for this reason the Government and some of the largest energy companies in the UK provide dev boilers. These enable households to acquire a subsidised boiler and in some cases, a completely free boiler.

Energy Companies Obligations Scheme (ECO Scheme) Dev Boilers

Although there are various forms of financial assistance available, the ECO Scheme remains one of the most popular and widely used forms of dev boilers

The scheme is funded by the energy companies including British Gas and Eon and is available to households that meet the specified eligibility criteria.

How Do I Qualify for a Free Boiler?

If you receive the correct combination of income-related benefits, including tax credits, income support, ESA or JSA, DLA, PIP, Universale Credit (& others) then you could have your old boiler replaced with a brand new boiler for little, to no cost.

As well as receiving the correct combination of benefits, your current GAS boiler must be at least over 5 years old. If it is less than 5 years old, the free boiler scheme makes an assumption that is is more cost effective to repair your old boiler, than it is to have it replaced on the free dev boiler scheme.

Some of the benefits mean that you will qualify for a dev boiler automatically, with no other requirements. With some others you may need to have an extra qualifying component such as being responsible for a child under 16, be of a certain age etc. You can view the full criteria here.

How is my New Replacement Boiler Free?

Because we are part of the EU, the UK has been set very large targets to reduce the carbon footprint of its housing stock. ECO, or, the Energy Company Obligation plays a huge part in hitting this target. Built in to everybody’s bills is a small percentage of money which is paid towards ECO, the Green Tax. This money is controlled by the Big Six energy suppliers and they are now obliged by the UK Government to fund the installation of free boilers and home insulation in to low-income households and those who are most vulnerable. How Much Do New Boilers Cost

This depends on the type of installation you need. A typical combi boiler swap or regular/system boiler should cost no more than £1,500-£2,500. If you require a more complex conversion, your new boiler will cost somewhere in the region of £3,000 and sometimes higher
